Turn of the Century Design Auctions

Furniture always features in this sale, thanks to our close proximity to High Wycombe, home to a number of influential furniture manufacturers and designers over the years, including William Birch and the Ercol factory. Ercol was originally founded by Lucian Ercolani, who was inspired by local design and craft in the Chiltern Hills where he lived and built his first factory there in 1920. Merging his Italian heritage with the craft traditions of the Wycombe furniture industry, Lucian produced what is now known as the mid-century style of furniture, supplied to iconic London stores of the time such as Heal’s. With growing interest in this mid-century style of furniture, a number of pieces are always included within this auction.

We also include a section in the sale dedicated to modern art, featuring items such as signed limited prints to gallery exhibition prints by some of the top artists of the 20th century. There is an emphasis on those who expanded their works into the world of design, such as Picasso and John Piper, as well as photographs by leading photographers, and original 20th Century art.

The auction caters for all budgets, with estimates ranging from £30 to £20,000 and covers a wide range of items from glass & ceramics to sculpture and furniture, and styles from modernist to industrial.
